Prostate cancer is a painful and potentially deadly disease that all men should be aware of. It’s wise to speak with your doctor and learn about your personal risk factors. You can begin to educate yourself on this topic by learning about the following three prostate cancer risk factors.
Age
Above all else, the older a person is, the more likely he is to develop prostate cancer. It’s relatively rare in men younger than 50 and almost unheard of for those under the age of 40. For this reason, doctors and medical professionals often recommend that a person over the age of 40 head to the doctor every year for a checkup. A relatively healthy man who enjoys a healthy diet won’t need to worry as much as someone who eats poorly and lives an unhealthy life. However, once a man is more than 65 years old, he is at a higher risk and needs to watch out for any symptoms.
Genes
As with other diseases, prostate cancer is often inherited. If your father or grandfather dealt with prostate cancer, you need to watch your diet and schedule annual exams with your doctor. Remember, if you catch the disease early on, you can possibly avoid life-threatening problems in the future.
Diet
Without a doubt, if you eat a poor diet high in fat, you will suffer in the long-term. If you are overweight and eat processed foods all the time, you will struggle to stay healthy and in shape. Your body will feel the effects of the high-fat diet, and you will develop problems, especially once you are 40 years old and older. To prevent this, consider a vegetarian diet. At minimum, try to cut meat out of your diet a few days a week, as this can drastically reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer. Don’t think you can avoid the doctor if you simply eat an ideal diet; prostate exams are still important.
